Colour Grading Video for Photographers…
I have been asked a number of times recently how I colour graded the video of Myra @ Mirra. Although its no master piece I thought I would write about how I did it here…
I edit with Final Cut Pro and whilst I do have Color available to me I wasn’t getting the results I wanted immediately as it is all new to me. I do plan on spending more time experimenting with Color in the future however but a quick fix for now, especially for photographers is to use programs you are already well versed at, Lightroom and/or Photoshop!
Here is how I did it (I wont go into the work-flow I use for importing the 5d MkII footage and transcoding it from its painful native format, but if you would like me to just let me know);
Firstly I edited all of my footage in FCP. Got it to the point where the sequence was pretty much complete. I then exported if from FCP;
- File – Export – Using Quicktime Conversion – Set a new folder and file name for this sequence.
- Format – Image Sequence ->
- Options – Format = Jpeg – Frames per second = (whatever your footage is orignially running at.) ->
- Options – Quality = Best
- Then OK
This will export your enitre sequence to individual images so depending on its length you will most likely end up with thousands of still images.
I then import all of these images into Lightroom and make my colour adjustments on one of these still images. Copy these setting (Settings – Copy Settings) then select the rest of the images and simply Synch these settings (Settings – Synch Settings) to the remainder of the images and the changes will be made on them automatically. (This could also be done using Photoshop then running a batch.) Once you are happy with how it looks export all of the images as jpg’s again into a new folder.
Now using Quicktime;
- Goto File – Open Image Sequence
- Select the first of the graded still images and open it.
- Set the frames per second to what you are working with.
- Quicktime will now open the entire sequence and you should be able to play it to see what it now looks like.
- Now Export this graded sequence into a format you are comfortable working with.
I then re-imported this graded sequence back into FCP and made any other final editing adjustments. I also then took mine into Motion and added some titles.
Well that is it. It may sound very long winded but really the process is not much different form using Color. Once you render your footage out to go into Color then render again I found it really didn’t take much more time. And because I can make colour adjustments int LR far faster then Color I believe it actually saved me work.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

This i s great information Glen! I’m busy with a script for a new dramatic upcoming Dutch series and this is really helpful for coloring my first pilot. I only have a few questions left. What are the export settings in Lightroom? Do you maybe know if it will also be possible to convert your frame rate from 30p to 24p when you can choose you’re Quicktime export sequence settings before u go to FCP again? In that case i can easily push it to 24p so i can drop the external audio content that i shot with a different device underneath my footage in FCP.
I hope you will understand me, I’m Dutch and my English grammar is not that precise
Again thanks for you’re help, you’ve got my ass to be creative again!
Kind regards,
Yossip Brandjes
Hi Yossip, I am glad I could provide some help…
What are the export settings in Lightroom?
I just exported the files to high quality jpgs at 72 dpi (as that is what screen resolution is but I could be wrong with HD?) and at the same size. I think that is all you would need them to be… I might look more into what dpi would be best actually sometime, but if you find out in the meantime please let me know.
Yes when opening an image sequence with Quicktime you have to set the frame rate so you can make it whatever you like I guess. This would effect the timeline somewhat but would be an easy way to get it to 24p.
Make sure you show me what you end up producing!
Thanks,
Glen.
Hi Glen,
First of all big thanks for you’re support!
I’m testing out my new FCE with Lightroom and some material. I still bump up to some problems. After i export the content with the image sequence part the stills will be less qualitative than the original material. You will see a lot of pixels, unsharpness etc. Here u see a sample.

Also when i export a quicktime movie with the highest quality available and the setting will be 1920×1080 the quality will also go down. My project setup is just 1920×1080 hd. Here u will see a sample again with the movie export part.

So in both ways the quality will go down. Do i miss something? I really export the stuff like you tell me too in you’re tutorial. And for video i use the best preferences. Hope u can help me again with this one.
Thanks,
Yossip

Wow! That really is a substantial quality loss! Well I am afraid you are now more of an expert at this process then I am Yossip. I have only done it once for the Myra video and as it was purely aimed for internet distribution I didn’t pay to much attention to quality loss. I would not be happy with these results either though. So you are getting this quality loss straight from the export to still image sequence? I am afraid then there is probably not much more you can do with quicktime as it appears to have limited export options. If still set on using LR or Photoshop for colour grading then… maybe look into exporting a still image sequence some other way out of FCP? Have you searched for any other resources? I am not sure I can help you anymore but very thankful that you have let me know this might not be the best option in the future.
Glen.
Hi Glen,
Few days later and bought some new software. First i learned to export my stuff on a new proper way and now i color my content with Magic Bullet Looks. If i finished a piece of my project you’ll be the first one to know.
Thanks again for all your help!
Kind regards,
Yossip
